报告简介:Social network analysis is a rich and exciting area of interdisciplinary research that has been tackled by many different scientific communities. Opinion dynamics is a popular topic which uses mathematical models to describe how opinions change as individuals interact over a network. This talk will present two recent developments that deepen our understanding of how individual-level processes combine with network-level interactions to generate rich and varied social phenomena.
In the first part, a novel opinion dynamics model is proposed to describe how an individual’s private and expressed opinions (which are not the same in general) evolve under pressure to conform to the group norm. We establish sufficient conditions for creating a discrepancy between an individual’s private and expressed opinions on arbitrary networks. In the second part, the recently proposed DeGroot-Friedkin model is studied. This model describes how an individual’s self-confidence (termed social power) in his/her own opinion evolves over discussion of a sequence of topics. We expand the model to study dynamic interaction topology, and find that every individual forgets his/her perceived (i.e. initial) social power exponentially fast.
