This talk is outlines some possibilities for the future development of concepts and applications in control engineering. To the extent that the future can be predicted, and not all of it can be predicted, it is a consequence of where we have come from, and the pressures of government policy, private sector perception of commercial opportunities, and the intellectual drive of university researchers to produce scientific innovations. Major new areas will include applications to life sciences, and the management of complexity, especially for systems of systems, and networked systems.
